BEST PLACES TO GO IN LATIN AMERICA IN APRIL
April marks autumn in the far south, the return of clear Andean skies further north, and the final stretch of the dry season in Central America.
For those looking to travel in April, we’ve gathered some of the region’s seasonal standouts – from puma tracking in Chile’s Torres del Paine and riding across Colombia’s Llanos, to island-hopping in Panama’s San Blas and reflections on Bolivia’s Uyuni salt flats.
Whether you are drawn to high-altitude landscapes, tropical coastlines or wide open plains, our specialists can help shape a journey around your interests and travel style – from active exploration to time spent slowing the pace.
Chile
April is one of the last great windows in Chilean Patagonia before winter sets in.
In Torres del Paine, forests take on deep autumn tones as temperatures drop and wildlife activity increases – making it one of the best times of year for puma sightings. It’s best to focus on the national park itself rather than heading further south or into the Lake District, where heavier rains begin.
Further north in the Atacama, the desert is at its crisp, clear best: cooler temperatures, sharp light, and excellent visibility across the altiplano. In Wine Country, the Vendimia (grape harvest) continues, with seasonal festivals and local celebrations marking the end of summer.

Colombia
April sits at the tail end of the dry season along the Caribbean coast. It’s a wonderful time to explore Cartagena, the cobbled streets far less pressurised than in the height of summer; off the coast, conditions at sea are well suited to time on the water around the Rosario Islands.
Further east, the vast cattle-ranching region of Los Llanos enters peak dry season. Riding across the open plains offers a clear sense of the region’s scale, with wildlife more easily seen as activity concentrates around fewer water sources. In the Coffee Triangle, April falls between harvests, when the landscape is at its most vividly green.

Panama
April is Panama’s final full month of the dry season, and one of its most rewarding.
Its Pacific shoreline and islands scattered along the coast offer calm seas for swimming, snorkelling, and diving. The San Blas Islands are a favourite: clear waters, near-empty beaches, and traditional Kuna communities.
On the mainland, hiking in Chiriquí’s cloud forests is still comfortable, while the Panama Canal remains a constant spectacle of engineering. April also brings the Orchid Festival, when the country’s extraordinary biodiversity takes centre stage.

Brazil
April is when Iguaçu Falls are at their best. The heavy rainy season has just ended, meaning the volume of water is still dramatic, but without the muddy torrents of peak summer – running clearer and allowing for better visibility.
In Rio de Janeiro, the worst of the summer humidity eases, making it more comfortable to move between the city’s neighbourhoods and coastline. It’s also a wonderful time for road travel through Minas Gerais, when greener landscapes suit longer journeys through Brazil’s historic gold-rush era towns and rural countryside.

Bolivia
Early April sits on the cusp between Bolivia’s wet and dry seasons.
On the Salar de Uyuni, the first half of the month may still offer the last traces of the wet-season mirror effect before the surface fully dries. As conditions stabilise, the Altiplano becomes easier to explore by road.
In La Paz, cooler air and clearer skies make it an ideal time to explore its neighbourhoods and surrounding valleys. Sucre offers a slower counterpoint, with colonial architecture and mild daytime temperatures.
