Set in subtropical rainforest, the Iguaçu Falls, meaning ‘Big Water’ in Guarani, straddle the border between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.
The Iguaçu River traces its way some 650kms through southern Brazil before plunging 269ft in a series of 275 falls. Wider than Victoria and higher than Niagara, they are one of the world’s greatest natural phenomena.
We suggest allowing one full-day for exploring both sides of the Falls. While it is impossible to avoid the crowds altogether, we recommend hitting the walkways on the Argentine side as early as possible – usually around 8am – leaving the afternoon free to explore by boat and helicopter. Those on short stays should stay in the National Park with sensational views of Iguaçu Falls, while our favourite jungle lodge is a better bet for those who want to stay longer.
