Where to Travel in March

BEST PLACES TO GO IN LATIN AMERICA IN MARCH

March marks a shift in seasons across South America, as autumn begins to set in.

It brings a very different tempo from the peak summer months: days are still long and pleasant, but with cooler evenings, and far fewer travellers. Further north, the dry season still holds across the Caribbean and Central America.

For those considering exploring Latin America in March, our specialists have selected five destinations that truly come into their own.

Guatemala

March in Guatemala is defined by the slow build towards Semana Santa, culminating in one of Latin America’s most elaborate religious events. In Antigua, processions of local brotherhoods wind through its colonial streets, which are transformed overnight, carpeted with dyed sawdust, flowers and pine needles.

Beyond Antigua, the dry season means clear mornings in the highlands and along Lake Atitlán, where you’ll find artisanal communities and weekly markets piled high with crafts and textiles.

Belize

In March, sea conditions along the cayes and atolls are typically calm. Clear visibility over the coral gardens of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and the deeper drop-offs beyond it make this a wonderful time for diving and snorkelling – spotting nurse sharks, reef turtles and schooling fish – or travelling by boat.

Inland, the forests of the Cayo District are still green from earlier rains but largely free from humidity, making it one of the best windows for combining time on the reef with exploration of Mayan sites, cave systems and lowland jungle.

Argentina

In Mendoza, March is defined by vendimia, the grape harvest – with early-morning picking and grape crushing beginning in the wineries.

Further south, in El Calafate and El Chaltén, Patagonia remains open. Conditions are still prime for hikes, glacier walks, kayaking and fishing, but high summer has passed, leaving trails and landscapes feeling more far quieter than in January or February – the sweet spot, we think.

Colombia

Along the Caribbean coast, March means long bright days to explore Cartagena’s walled historic centre, sail between the Rosario Islands, or hike through the forests and beaches of Tayrona National Park – with significantly fewer visitors than earlier in the season.

Inland, the hills of the Coffee Region are at their greenest, with coffee fincas in full working mode and clear conditions for hiking. Further north, the Andean cloud forests come into their own for walking and birding.

Havana Holidays | Cuba Vacations | South America

Cuba

March is one of the most reliable months to travel in Cuba: low rainfall, manageable heat and long days. In Havana, the month often coincides with the Festival del Habano, bringing cigar growers and collectors into the city for factory visits, tastings and industry events.

Further west, Viñales and Pinar del Río lend themselves to slow travel – cycle between tobacco farms, walk the limestone valleys and spend time with local farmers while the fields are still active and the tracks remain dry and firm. Coastal conditions are equally consistent, with warm water and calm seas for boat trips to the nearby cayes.
