A LUXURY VACATION TO SANTIAGO

Modern and cosmopolitan, Chile’s capital city, Santiago, rises in a natural amphitheatre at the foot of the Andes – home to a thriving, forward-thinking food and arts scene.

A couple of nights in one of the capital’s sharper boutique hotels is about right to dip into its independent galleries and museums, and to eat well at its restaurants. The city’s architecture runs the gamut from neoclassical mansions to radical Brutalist experiments, with cultural spaces that reflect both its Mapuche heritage and contemporary Latin American voices.

Chile’s extraordinary geography means that in Santiago one is rarely far from the action. In less than two hours, you can be on the Andean ski slopes of Valle Nevado, lolling on the beach of a Pacific fishing village, or drinking old-vine Cabernet in a family-run vineyard in the Maipo Valley – making it the ideal springboard into the rest of the country.

WHAT TO DO IN SANTIAGO

In the city’s historic quarter, 19th-century neoclassical façades butt up against vivid street art and leafy museum courtyards.

We’ll pair you with a private guide for a morning exploring its cultural scene, from the National Museum of Fine Arts to small studios spotlighting emerging Chilean artists. Drop into La Chascona, Pablo Neruda’s hilltop house, for a maze of bookshelves and eccentricity. Lunch might be a favourite neighbourhood spot in Barrio Italia or Vitacura; dinner, a chef’s table experience with one of the city’s rising stars, before bedding down in one of the bohemian quarter’s charming boutique hotels.

Just beyond the city’s limits, Chile’s wine regions offer a change of pace. The Casablanca Valley is renowned for its cool-climate whites, while the world-class wineries of Colchagua and Apalta produce some of Chile’s most celebrated reds. We can arrange private wine tastings with head winemakers, cellar visits not open to the public, and overnights at lodges that blend contemporary architecture with serious wine pedigree.

ELSEWHERE IN CHILE

Chile captivates with its dramatic landscapes, from the arid Atacama Desert to the majestic peaks of Torres del Paine and the emerald waters of the Lake District.

It’s a land of striking contrasts, where ancient traditions sit alongside a dynamic, contemporary culture – and we’ve spent years exploring its every corner. From the vineyards of the Central Valley to the mysterious Moai of Easter Island and the beaches of the Pacific Coast, we can open doors to places and people few travellers ever encounter.
