Chile’s Carretera Austral extends from the lush valleys and glacier studded fjords of the Lakes Region, through Puerto Aysen, Coyhaique and Cochrane, as far as Villa O’Higgins.
One way to explore this remote corner of Patagonia is by 4×4, but be prepared for long drives along bumpy roads. The scenery in this part of Chile is always remarkable. We also arrange 3-5 night Aysen expeditions by helicopter and light aircraft, guided by pilots who have been exploring the region for years.
There are opportunities to kayak with dolphins, sea lions and pelicans on the fjord-riven Pacific coastline, and to discover breathtaking flora and fauna of the Patagonia Park – Chile’s vast 260,000-hectare collection of national parks.
Properties in Aysen tend to be cosy and comfortable, catering to a relatively low volume of travellers. Opportunities for hiking, riding, climbing and fishing in near-solitude are boundless.
