Cayo District

Cayo District is the adventure hub of Belize; its forests, wild rivers, gorges, creeks and caves setting the scene for a range of adrenaline-charged outdoor activities from white-water rafting to trekking, mountain biking and canoeing through stalactite-studded caves. The impressive Mayan ruins of Xunantunich sit just within the Belizean border, making this a great area to tie in with a visit to Guatemala’s famous Tikal ruins.

There’s an excellent selection of top-end hotels to choose from in Cayo, each with a different offering, some eco-lodges with a focus on nature explorations, others boasting top-quality spas or sensational waterfall views, and others catering more to the adventurous traveller. Our specialists will discuss the alternatives with you to find the one that best fits the experience you’re seeking.

Francis Ford Coppola’s luxury retreat, Blancaneaux Lodge, is a Swiss Family Robinson-style network of rustic casitas dotted through the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, overlooking a river. It’s our favourite lodge in the Cayo District region, offering excellent service and wonderful guiding. There’s also fantastic horse-riding at Blancaneaux, which is a lovely way to explore the surroundings off-track.
