EXPERIENCE BRAZILIAN CULTURE

Select a Sense

Amazonian cuisine is shaped by the rainforest itself: abundant river fish, wild game, and ingredients found nowhere else on earth. Dishes feature tucunaré and tambaqui grilled over open flames, or pirarucu salted and dried in the traditional way. Fruits such as cupuaçu, bacaba, and açaí appear in juices, sauces, and desserts, while manioc is the foundation of almost every meal.

In music, too, the Amazon draws from its rivers and forests. Carimbó percussion shakes out of Pará; the Parintins Festival floods the region with drums and chants; flutes and rattles echo Indigenous traditions. Younger artists are mixing traditional rhythms with samba, forró, bossa, and even electronic beats.

Brazilian design: modernist furniture, ceramics, gemstones, artisanal crafts. Cachaça and Havaianas are classics, but we can also point you towards the country’s most interesting ateliers and independent boutiques.

We love Machado de Assis’s Dom Casmurro, navigating themes of love and betrayal. Today, authors like Clarice Lispector explore existentialism in works like “The Hour of the Star”. Find more in our bespoke reading list courtesy of the great John Sandoe.

  • When is the best time to visit the Amazon?

We typically recommend the dry season from June to November for Amazon exploration. During this period, water levels are lower, revealing jungle trails and offering easier access to wildlife.

The wet season of December to May also has its own charm, with lush landscapes, blossoming flora, and vibrant waterways perfect for canoeing and river excursions.

For more detailed information on the dates of the wet and dry season for each country, check out our field note When to Visit the Amazon.

  • What countries are part of the Amazon?

The Amazon Basin spans nine countries in South America: Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.
