Northwestern Argentina is a mesmerising land of desert, subtropical jungle, cactus forests, plunging gorges, artisan communities and high-altitude vineyards.
These northern provinces have more in common with the Quechuan cultures of Bolivia and Peru than with the rest of the country. Its society, culture and traditions contrast dramatically with Argentina’s European south.
We generally recommend self-drive, or setting out in the company of one of our expert guides. You will carve through some of the most extraordinary landscapes in Argentina, staying in low-key but comfortable mix of family-run fincas, working farms and wine hotels.
The possibilities for adventure in this remote land are near-infinite.
Saddle up with the gauchos to round cattle, or check on tobacco and sugarcane plantations. There are trekking routes with llamas; high Andean passes to be explored on foot or by 4×4; small galleries and a stunning archaeological museums – even a James Turrell collection of light sculptures.
Those who enjoy exploring under their own steam by 4×4 should consider following the Route 40 from Mendoza to Jujuy, as far as the Bolivian border.
