The sprawl is tempered by green spaces – Ibirapuera Park, designed by Niemeyer, is the city’s heart, while Burle Marx’s gardens and the vast Cantareira State Park bring rainforest within reach of downtown.
Food is the city’s other great calling card: from Japanese kitchens and Italian bakeries to neighbourhood botecos and chefs experimenting with Amazonian ingredients.
And each November, São Paulo shifts gears for the Brazilian Grand Prix, one of Formula 1’s most celebrated fixtures.
