Seven private spa suites arranged around the former family home of winemaker Susana Balbo.
In Chacras de Coria, you’ll find the former home of Argentina’s first female winemaker. Susana created the hotel with her daughter, Ana, placing the family’s cellar, art collection and relationships with Mendoza’s winemakers at the centre of the property. With only seven suites, it feels closer to a private house than a wine hotel, albeit one with a sommelier, a chef’s table and a luxurious spa programme.
Each glass-walled suite opens onto a private garden with heated loungers and its own fire pit. Inside are a steam room, sensations shower, deep soaking tub and massage table; four suites also have a dry sauna. The original house has a library, an alabaster-fronted bar and La Vida restaurant, while the outdoor pool takes on a different character after dark, when the central fire is lit.
What we love about Susana Balbo’s House & Spa
- Seven large spa suites, each with a private garden, fire pit, steam room, soaking tub and heated loungers.
- Four suites with a dry sauna positioned just a few steps from the bed.
- Private treatments carried out in your room making use of garden herbs, grape seeds and red-wine must.
- Sommelier-led tastings and winery visits selected by Susana Balbo and her family.
- Ana Balbo’s collection of Argentine art displayed throughout the house.
- Dinner at La Vida, where chef Flavia Amad Di Leo pairs Argentine ingredients and open-fire cooking with wines from the family cellar
From private cellar tastings to treatments in your suite
You might begin with a sommelier-led tasting in the private cellar, comparing wines from the Susana Balbo portfolio. The family also arranges private Winemaking Expeditions through Mendoza, with transport, winery visits and wine-paired lunches. The team select producers according to your interests, from long-established estates to newer projects and smaller family bodegas.
Back at the hotel, enjoy treatments from the privacy of your suite. Therapists incorporate herbs and grape seeds from the garden into aromatherapy rituals. You can also join a class making Argentine sweets or learn how to prepare empanadas and asado, spend time beside the pool or open a bottle from your suite’s wine fridge beside the garden fire.
Chacras de Coria has artists’ studios, galleries, independent shops and a Sunday market in its main square. Further afield, the hotel can arrange hiking, cycling, horseback riding and rafting excursions in the Andes. There’s also the option to take an air safari over Mendoza’s vineyards, salt flats and mountain range, followed by a desert landing and private lunch. In the evening, La Vida offers à la carte dining or a seven-course menu with a choice of wine pairings.
When to Travel
Mendoza can be visited throughout the year. Spring, from September to November, and autumn, from March to May, bring comfortable conditions for winery visits and time outdoors. The grape harvest generally runs from February into April, when the vineyards are at their busiest. Summer days can be hot, while winter brings colder mornings and evenings, with snow across the higher Andes. The hotel’s private spa facilities, cellar and restaurant make it equally well suited to stays outside the main wine season.
