TAILOR-MADE LUXURY VACATIONS TO THE RIVIERA MAYA & ISLA HOLBOX
Along Mexico’s Caribbean coast, long white-sand beaches give way to mangroves, fishing villages and warm, clear water in every shade of blue.
Stretching along the eastern edge of the Yucatán Peninsula, the Riviera Maya extends south towards the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, where mangroves, lagoons and protected coastline sit alongside some of Mexico’s finest beaches. Coral reefs lie just offshore, while inland, freshwater cenotes pepper the jungle.
Off the northern coast, laid-back Isla Holbox sits between the Gulf of Mexico and the mainland. Known for its sandy streets, brightly painted houses and working fishing community, its shores are home to a wonderful variety of wildlife, including flamingos, pelicans and migrating whale sharks.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO ON THE RIVIERA MAYA
Walk long, powdery-white beaches, snorkel over coral gardens and sandbars, and visit ancient Mayan sites and cenotes hidden in the sprawling jungle.
Explore the Caribbean by boat, spotting marine life with a naturalist guide, or simply settle into a hammock beneath a thatched palapa as fishing boats pass along the horizon. While parts of the Riviera Maya have become synonymous with beach resorts, we infinitely prefer its quieter corners, and can steer travellers to characterful boutique hotels and private homes tucked away in less-visited pockets of the coast.
Offshore, the tiny island of Isla Holbox has a character all of its own. The secret is well and truly out, but it has retained its charm and slow pace of life. Between June and September, it’s one of the best places in Mexico to swim with whale sharks; its shallow lagoons also support flamingos, roseate spoonbills, frigate birds, and the bioluminescent plankton that puts on a stunning nighttime show.
