The Nazca Lines, visible only from the air, are among the most beguiling mysteries left by Peru’s ancient civilisations.

Etched into the high, windless plateau of the Nazca Desert, 400km south of Lima, these vast 2,000-year-old geoglyphs are made up of some 800 straight lines, 300 geometric figures, and 70 animal and plant forms.

The giant runways and pictographs – a monkey, a shark, a condor, a spider – measure up to 200 metres across, and can only be truly appreciated from above. Needless to say, we have just the pilot.

Venture deep into the Ecuadorian Amazon and you’ll encounter the Sápara, once a nation of more than 200,000 people and now one of the smallest Indigenous groups in the region. Their Naku Centre is a beacon of eco-tourism and conservation: a community-led project devoted to sharing their cosmology and kinship with the forest and its spirit world.

Hidden in the jungle’s depths, the centre is reached either by a short flight or a two-day trek through some of the most biodiverse terrain on Earth. There, learn first-hand from the Sápara about ancestral practices of dream interpretation and plant medicine, swim in the Conambo River, camp on its banks, and begin to grasp their cosmovision that recognises the sacredness of all things – visible and invisible.
