A GUIDE TO SPOTTING JAGUARS IN THE PANTANAL, BRAZIL
There is nowhere in the world where you’re more likely to see a wild jaguar than Brazil’s Pantanal.
Covering an area larger than England, the Pantanal is the world’s largest tropical wetland. During the dry season, its rivers, lagoons and grasslands become concentrated corridors for wildlife, home to capybaras, giant anteaters, jabiru storks and caimans. Yet it is the jaguar that draws travellers here.
Twenty years ago, seeing a jaguar in the wild was a matter of extraordinary luck. Today, thanks to decades of conservation work and careful wildlife management, the Pantanal offers the best chance anywhere on Earth of observing one in its natural habitat, attracting wildlife photographers, conservationists and safari enthusiasts from around the globe.

Where to Stay for a Jaguar Safari in the Pantanal
There are numerous places to see jaguars in the Pantanal, but our favourite base – by far – is Caiman. Set within a 53,000-hectare private reserve in the southern Pantanal, it’s home to Onçafari, a conservation organisation that has changed the way jaguars are studied and protected in Brazil.
Jaguars are, of course, the main attraction, but they’re only one part of the experience. The reserve is also home to giant anteaters, giant otters, tapirs, marsh deer, capybaras, caiman and more than 350 species of birds, including the unmistakable hyacinth macaw.
It’s never possible to entirely guarantee a sighting of a wild predator; however, healthy jaguar populations, decades of conservation work and some of the finest wildlife trackers anywhere in South America make this the most reliable place anywhere on Earth to see them. The guides know individual animals and can often tell which one they’re tracking from a set of prints or the location of a recent camera trap. Years of careful habituation to vehicles mean that if you do find a jaguar, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to sit quietly and watch it without affecting its behaviour.
The lodge itself is comfortable and low-key, with just a handful of rooms, excellent food and guides who have spent years in the Pantanal. After dawn game drives, afternoons are spent by the pool or watching wildlife from the veranda before heading out again as temperatures cool.
The Jaguar Tracking Experience
Days begin early; accompanied by specialist guides and trackers, guests head out before sunrise in search of fresh tracks, camera-trap activity and signs of movement from known jaguars whose territories overlap the property.
Tracking is as much about understanding the ecosystem as it is about finding the cats themselves. Along the way, guides interpret footprints, bird calls and animal behaviour to build a picture of the landscape around you.
Unlike many wildlife encounters, where the experience is over almost as soon as it begins, sightings here can last for an hour or more. You might see a female emerge from the gallery forest with cubs in tow, or a large male patrolling the edge of a riverbank before vanishing back into the vegetation.
Planning Your Pantanal Safari
While the Pantanal is spectacular year-round, the dry season (May to September) offers the best conditions for jaguar tracking and wildlife photography – water levels recede, meaning animals concentrate around the remaining lagoons and waterways.
