WELCOME TO THE CARIBBEAN COAST

From the turtle nesting beaches of Tortuguero to the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge of Puerto Viejo, the Caribbean coast is a wildlife lover’s dream.

Venture out through the natural lagoons in a canoe in Tortuguero National Park, home to caimans and endangered green turtles.

Most visitors to Costa Rica bypass its Caribbean coast, put off by unpredictable weather and an informal infrastructure. The first road to Puerto Viejo only came in 2001, not long after mains electricity. The vibe here is nothing but easy going. Reggae and calypso hang on the breeze. Sloths occasionally relax along the beach at dusk.

TRAVELLING DEEPER

For an authentic east coast experience, we favour the south, where there’s a distinct Afro-Caribbean vibe, exuberant locals and undeniably tasty seafood!

Indulge in the laidback lifestyle, passing the hours with a good book in a secluded hammock, or head out in a glass-bottom boat to explore the coral reef surrounding the National Park. Return to the shore to enjoy a spicy seafood gumbo at our favourite local beach bar.
