Pacuare Lodge, Costa Rica | Plan South America

Costa Rica | Ecolodge | Jungle | Pacuare

Perched on the banks of the Rio Pacuare, Pacuare Lodge sets an impressive blueprint for the perfect ecolodge. Launched in 1986, the project has had time to develop into something remarkable.

What we love about Pacuare Lodge

  • The knowledgeable and highly professional guides
  • The electricity free rooms
  • The Canopy Honeymoon Suite with private suspension bridge
  • The riverside spa – the massages are out of this world
  • The focus on sustainability – having the lowest possible impact on the environment is a priority for Pacuare
  • The food, most of which is sourced from organic, locally grown ingredients
  • The atmosphere – the lodge is lit up by hundreds of candles at night

What to do at Pacuare Lodge?

We recommend our clients spend three nights at Pacuare Lodge.

Rafting in and out of the lodge is a highlight at Pacuare and something all guests are encouraged to do. The river is surrounded by rugged canyons and dense jungle, and the rapids are unrivalled.

Whilst at the lodge, guests can also enjoy hikes to waterfalls, an impressive canopy circuit, canyoning, birding, and trekking.

Map & location

Pacuare Lodge is located within 25,000 acres of protected jungle on the banks of the Rio Pacuare.

There are a couple of options of how to get to Pacuare from San Jose. The first, drive for approximately two hours and then continue in a jeep for the final part of the journey which is off road through dense jungle. The second option is to drive for approximately two hours and then white water raft down the Rio Pacuare for 90 minutes to the lodge.

When to Travel

Pacuare Lodge can be visited year round, but we recommend travelling between November and April for the best chance of sunshine. September and October are good months to avoid as rainfall can be particularly strong.
