Los Almendros

SUCHITOTO, EL SALVADOR

WELCOME TO LOS ALMENDROS

Just an hour from San Salvador, Los Almendros de San Lorenzo is a boutique hotel housed in an old colonial hacienda.

Hotel Los Almendros de San Lorenzo sits in the centre of Suchitoto within a colonial house that has stood here for more than two centuries. French-Salvadoran owners, Pascal Lebailly and his partner Joaquin Rodezno, have created an oasis in what was once an abandoned and deteriorating mansion. The duo have painstakingly restored and decorated the house with one-of-a-kind art and antiques collected over the course of their lives.

There are just eleven rooms and suites, arranged around a tropical courtyard and gardens. Interiors are individually decorated with local artwork, colonial-style furniture, original stonework and high ceilings. There is a generous stone pool to the rear, a library and bar, and a well-regarded restaurant serving French cooking with local touches.

What we love about Los Almendros

  • The hotel is located right in the centre of Suchitoto, just a block from the main square.
  • The building is more than 200 years old, with the original colonial character still intact throughout the house.
  • There is a real mix of local artwork, antiques and one-off decorative details used throughout.
  • Just seven rooms, two suites and two apartment-suites, each with its own feel and unique decor.
  • Older rooms around the central patio feel especially rooted in the original hacienda.
  • There’s a library, bar, tropical courtyard and free form stone pool in the rear garden.
  • The restaurant brings together French cooking and Salvadoran ingredients.

What to do at Los Almendros

Suchitoto is best explored on foot.

From the hotel, you can wander through the town’s cobbled streets, browse small shops and galleries, stop for coffee on the main square or sit down for a pupusa in one of the local diners nearby. The owners are well connected to the local arts scene, which adds another layer, with a gallery just opposite the hotel exhibiting work by Salvadoran artists.

Beyond the town itself, there is plenty to do in the surrounding area. You can get anywhere in El Salvador and back the same day. Boat trips on Lake Suchitlán are an easy addition, while those wanting something more active can look to kayaking, white-water rafting or a visit to a nearby coffee plantation. Suchitoto also works well as a base for a cultural pause within a wider El Salvador trip, whether coming from San Salvador or continuing on towards the country’s volcanoes and coast.

When to Travel

Suchitoto can be visited year-round, though the dry season from November to April generally brings sunnier days and is often the most comfortable to walk around town and spend time outdoors. The green season from May to October brings heavier bursts of rain and a lusher landscape, with fewer visitors and a slower feel. The town’s cultural life runs throughout the year, so timing often depends more on the wider rhythm of your trip than on the destination alone.
