WELCOME TO LA TIERRA

A secluded two-bedroom country house in the rolling hills above Garzon.

Reached along a dirt road through open countryside, La Tierra sits high in the hills of rural Maldonado, with uninterrupted views across the surrounding countryside, and few neighbours. Owned by a young British family, it feels like a warm, much-loved home, with just two bedrooms, gorgeous interiors, and a lovely pool.

Pueblo Garzón is around 15 minutes away, and José Ignacio and the Atlantic coast can be reached in roughly 40 minutes.

What we love about La Tierra

  • Two bedrooms, sleeping four — one king and one twin – perfect for a couple or a family with children.
  • The large covered veranda, with several seating areas, a long dining table, bar and parrilla for cooking outside.
  • The private swimming pool with views across the surrounding countryside.
  • The house comes with a cook and housekeeper, Lorena; massage therapists and a private chef can be brought in.
  • Pueblo Garzón is just 15 minutes away for restaurants, galleries, wineries and olive oil farms, and José Ignacio and the coast are roughly 40 minutes by car.
  • La Tierra has its own horses and a gaucho who can take guests riding nearby.
What to do at La Tierra

Spend the morning by the pool, explore the surrounding hills on foot, or venture out on horseback with a local gaucho.

Stop for a picnic along the way, or head to Bodega Garzón for wine tasting and lunch among the vineyards. Back at the house, massages can be arranged on the veranda, and special dinners can be arranged with a private chef.

The village of Pueblo Garzón, around 15 minutes away, is tiny but has an unusually good concentration of restaurants and contemporary art galleries; Francis Mallmann helped put it on the culinary map with Restaurante Garzón. The village pulpería is worth a visit on Friday evenings.

Further south, Fundación Pablo Atchugarry and MACA have exhibition spaces and a large outdoor sculpture park. Continue on to José Ignacio, around 40 minutes from La Tierra, for a day on the beach and lunch by the Atlantic.

When to Travel

December to February is summer in Uruguay, with warm days and long evenings. January is peak season in José Ignacio, and the coast is lively, but La Tierra is well removed from the crowds.

Autumn (March and April) is quieter but usually still warm, and spring — particularly October and November — is ideal for riding, walking and winery visits. Winter is cooler and much quieter, and restaurants and galleries tend to have reduced hours.
