A LUXURY HOLIDAY TO LA LIBERTAD
La Libertad runs along El Salvador’s Pacific coast – a rugged stretch of shoreline known for its world-class surf, black-sand beaches, and easygoing pace.
One of Central America’s finest surf destinations, it is still very much under the radar compared to its neighbours, and feels rather like Costa Rica did a few decades ago – with a laid-back atmosphere and an eclectic crowd of local surfers, expats, and in-the-know visitors.
We can steer you to the best ways to experience it, from extraordinary beachfront homes right in front of the best point breaks to trusted local instructors and guides.
WHAT TO SEE & DO IN LA LIBERTAD
Our favourite base is El Zonte, a small, refreshingly low-key town set between hills and the ocean.
It’s known for its steady right-hand point break, with waves that can climb to ten feet on a good day, and surfers out from first light until dusk – though beginners are well catered for, too. There’s a top-notch wellness scene, surf lessons are plentiful, and a clutch of good (albeit eccentric) restaurants.
A little further along the coast is El Tunco, named after an offshore rock said to resemble an upturned pig. It’s livelier, particularly at weekends, with a mix of surfers, backpackers, and locals gathering after dark.
From the coast, inland coffee plantations and forested trails sit within easy reach; a favourite is Tamanique, where paths wind past guanacaste trees and morpho butterflies, leading to a series of waterfalls hidden in the hills.
