A Bali-inspired beach villa set just outside the surf town of Santa Teresa, steps from the ocean.
Casa Dewa sits among tropical gardens just behind Playa Hermosa, a long stretch of sand just north of Santa Teresa and one of the quieter beaches in this part of the Nicoya Peninsula.
The house is built from massive ironwood columns salvaged from the seabed off Indonesia, where they had lain for some 80 years, and a century-old rice barn brought over from Java, with original teak panelling forming the upper floor. There are six en-suite bedrooms, large, open-sided living and dining spaces, and a swimming pool and yoga shala in the gardens. A private path leads through the palms and straight onto the sand.

Playa Hermosa is quieter than neighbouring Santa Teresa, with a wide sandy beach and gentler waves than the breaks further south. It’s a good place to learn; experienced surfers can follow the coast to Playa Carmen for more challenging breaks.
A few kilometres south, Santa Teresa has evolved from an out-of-the-way surf town into a lively mix of surf culture, good food and chic hotels. Its dusty road is now lined with excellent restaurants, bakeries, boutiques and beach bars, though surfboards strapped to quad bikes are still part of the scenery.
Continue south to Mal País, where boats head out for tuna, mahi-mahi and roosterfish. Across the peninsula, Montezuma is known for its waterfalls, and nearby Cabo Blanco – Costa Rica’s first protected wilderness area – has hiking trails through tropical forest to the coast.
Chable Yucatán is located in Yucatán, the Southern Mexican state known for its caves & cenotes. A place of complete serenity, the hotel sits at the end of a dusty road outside the village of Chochola.
The hotel is a 30-minute drive from Merida’s International Airport. There are direct flights from several cities within Mexico, including Mexico City and Oaxaca.

When to Travel
Our favourite time is December to April, when the Pacific coast is at its driest and days are reliably hot and sunny. November and May are good shoulder-season alternatives, with greener landscapes and fewer visitors; surfers after bigger, more consistent swell should consider the green season from May onwards. September and October bring the heaviest rains.
