Tierra Atacama

ATACAMA DESERT, CHILE

WELCOME TO TIERRA ATACAMA

On the edge of desert oasis San Pedro de Atacama, Tierra Atacama offers a contemporary take on life in Chile’s high-altitude wilderness.

The lodge occupies the grounds of a century-old cattle corral, where fragments of its original adobe walls still stand as a reminder of its past. Following a full redesign in 2025, it now offers 28 guest rooms, with generous shared spaces including a pool, spa and stylish restaurant, all with expansive glass windows that bring the desert inside.

Expect a well-curated program of guided explorations across the salt flats, valleys and geysers; good local cuisine and cocktails by the pool; and knowledgeable, super-friendly staff and guides.

What we love about Tierra Atacama

  • Just 28 bright, airy rooms, including four generous suites which come with their own guide & 4WD for private exploration.
  • The sleek contemporary design, with chic wood and leather furnishings, locally-sourced white marble, handwoven Chilean textiles, and contemporary art by over 40 local artists.
  • The local Atacameño cuisine, much of it hyper-locally-sourced flora and fauna from the desert, paired with wines from a proudly Chilean cellar.
  • The Uma Spa, with indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, steam room, and sunken lounge – the perfect retreat after a day of high-altitude hiking.
  • The excellent staff and guides, who bring warmth and a wealth of knowledge to the experience.
  • Tierra’s continued commitment to sustainability: solar power, water recycling, native landscaping, and partnerships that support nearby communities.

What to do at Tierra Atacama

Days here are all about exploring the desert’s otherworldly landscapes, and Tierra puts on a program of small, flexible excursions with a stellar roster of local guides.

Hike across the shale ridges of Vallecito, wander the coloured ridges of Rainbow Valley, or float in the high-salinity waters of Cejar Lagoon. The Tatio Geysers, flamingo-filled salt flats, and ancient petroglyphs are all within easy reach. For the more active, there’s dune buggying, mountain biking, and horse riding along ancient trading routes.

At sunrise, soar by hot air balloon over Licanbur volcano, watching the golden light sweep across its caldera. When night falls, the desert sky reveals its stars in sharp, brilliant clarity – a reminder of just how far from the world you’ve come.

When to Travel

We recommend visiting the Atacama Desert between May to September. Clear skies, dry air, and perfect visibility are ingredients of the high season, which brings sharp desert light by day and ink-black skies by night. Daytime highs are pleasant, while temperatures drop with the sun, offering a welcome excuse to end the day fireside or in the spa. Come either side of peak season for a quieter rhythm and the rare, green flush that follows desert rain.
