A LUXURY VACATION TO THE COSTA VERDE

Brazil’s Costa Verde is a cinematic sweep of rainforest-covered mountains, colonial towns, and emerald-green waters.

Stretching between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, this coastal region is a world apart from the country’s metropolises – a place where fishermen’s boats bob in secluded bays and beaches back onto wild Atlantic forest.

From the cobbled streets of Paraty to Angra dos Reis’ marine reserves and Ilha Grande’s car-free shores, we know the finest boutique hideaways and private villas, the best boats for island-hopping, and the most extraordinary ways to explore the coastline in style.

WHAT TO SEE & DO ON THE COSTA VERDE

Paraty is the standout of the Costa Verde – a beautifully-preserved Portuguese colonial town of cobbled streets and whitewashed townhouses.

Set out by sailboat, dropping anchor in hidden coves for a swim and a seafood lunch, or head inland to walk old trails through the Atlantic Forest. Back in town, there are ateliers and galleries to browse, independent boutiques, and a handful of excellent restaurants. Encounters with the local caiçara community offer a window into long-standing coastal traditions.

Winding south through cattle ranches and pine forests, the Santa Catarina coast boasts some of Brazil’s most delicious shellfish (the oysters are out of this world) and its most shamelessly indulgent resort, set on a privately-owned peninsula. This is also a great area to watch southern right whales, which come here to breed between July and November.
