Casa Brasileira

BOUTIQUE ART HOTEL ON THE ALAGOAS COAST

WELCOME TO CASA BRASILEIRA

A seven-room Brazilian art hotel set among botanical gardens on Alagoas’ northern coast.

Built on a former coconut plantation beside Praia do Patacho beach, Casa Brasileira began life as Villa Nandie, a private home inspired by Alagoas’ fazendas de coco – the grand residences of the region’s coconut estates. In 2022, it was transformed into an intimate hotel-gallery conceived as a manifesto à brasilidade: a celebration of Brazilian identity through art, food, culture and craftsmanship.

Rooms are spread across the main house and three bungalows in the grounds. Surrounding the house is a botanical garden that took ten years to mature, with hundreds of palms, two lakes and rare plants native to Alagoas. Beyond the gardens, a path leads straight onto the pale sands of Praia do Patacho, where the reef reveals shallow natural pools at low tide.

What we love about Casa Brasileira

  • The four individually-designed suites in the original Villa Nandie; the Master Suite occupies the former owners’ bedroom, with a bathtub overlooking the coconut palms and sea.
  • Three characterful bungalows tucked in the gardens, each with their own pool; Bangalô Palmeira Azul occupies what was once Villa Nandie’s children’s playroom,  with a circular private pool, an open-air bathing area and a veranda.
  • The design retain the character of a Brazilian family home, with turquoise-painted window frames, regional arabesques, antique furniture and a collection of Brazilian artworks and Northeastern handicrafts.
  • The kitchen draws on the owners’ childhood recipes and Brazilian home cooking, with breakfast served until midday and the option to dine privately in your bungalow or in different corners of the gardens.
  • A main outdoor swimming pool, tennis court and sauna, with massages available on request.
  • The house has its own little white chapel tucked among the palms, which stands beside one of the lakes along the palm-lined entrance drive.

What to do at Casa Brasileira

At low tide, travel by jangada across the reef to Patacho’s natural pools, where small fish gather in the warm, shallow water.

Explore the coast by kayak, stand-up paddleboard or bicycle, or arrange a ride on horseback along the beach. Head out with local fishermen to learn traditional fishing techniques, go diving in the warm coastal waters or take a buggy along neighbouring beaches and up to viewpoints overlooking the coast. Come evening, take a sunset raft trip along the waterways of the Manguaba River, passing through the surrounding tropical landscape.

The nearby Tatuamunha River is home to a community-led conservation project protecting the endangered West Indian manatee. Guided by local boatmen, travel silently along the mangrove-lined river in a pole-powered jangada, with the chance to spot manatees in the wild.

Back at the hotel, play a set on the garden tennis court, cool off in the pool or unwind with a massage. Wander through the botanical gardens, stopping at the little white chapel beside the lake, before settling in for a long Brazilian lunch or dinner among the palms.

When to Travel

Casa Brasileira can be visited throughout the year. September to March generally brings drier weather to the Alagoas coast, with warm days suited to time on the beach and boat trips. April to August means more rain, although temperatures remain high. Trips to Patacho’s natural pools depend on the tide, so departure times change from day to day.
