ISLA HOLBOX, MEXICO

WELCOME TO SER CASASANDRA

On the northern fringe of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, where the Caribbean collides with the Gulf of Mexico, lies Isla Holbox. Set in the island’s heart, Ser Casasandra offers a sanctuary of stillness.

Originally a private home, it has been transformed by the Cuban artist Sandra Pérez Lozano into a retreat for restoration; it’s a place where poetry, stillness, and barefoot ease meet. Art lines the walls, candles flicker and music drifts across breezy terraces.

There are just 17 rooms and a single villa, strung across a palm-shaded estate in whitewashed buildings with thatched palapa roofs. Free from  fuss, the hotel is adorned with handwoven hammocks, driftwood, cool stone floors and Caribbean light. The feeling is an invitation into a space designed for rest, creativity and quiet contemplation.

What we love about Ser Casasandra

  • The artist’s touch is apparent; Sandra’s vision has created something gentle, lived-in and full of feeling. It’s subtly styled and soulful.
  • Elegant, spare interiors with fine linens and polished concrete make for a home-like luxury.
  • Wellness is woven into the experience, with morning beach yoga, holistic spa treatments, sound therapy and workshops led by local healers.
  • The restaurant is helmed by Yucatán-born chef Roberto Solis and serves naturally flavoursome dishes, including fresh seafood, just-picked greens, and exceptional mezcal cocktails.
  • Its gentle pace means that even when full, it never feels busy. Days unfold quietly, with sea swims, long lunches and the occasional flamingo sighting.
  • The poolside bar and terrace provide a peaceful backdrop to drift through late afternoons with a drink and a good book.

What to do at Ser Casasandra

Isla Holbox rewards idleness as much as it does exploration.

There’s the bioluminescent lagoon, where stars appear to rise from the sea. Flamingos nest in the shallows. Whale sharks glide through open water between June and September. You can fish, kayak through the mangroves, or take a boat to nearby Yalahau Lagoon.

Back at Ser Casasandra, days can be shaped around painting classes, sound healing, Mayan clay rituals or simply a hammock and the tide. The team can arrange barefoot dinners on the beach, mezcal tastings, or a visit to the nearby artists’ collective.

When to Travel

The best time to visit Isla Holbox is during the dry season, from November through to April, when skies are clear, rain is scarce, and sea breezes soften the heat. Temperatures hover between 24–30°C. Whale shark season runs from mid-May to mid-September, best for those hoping to swim with the gentle giants. Avoid October, which tends to be wet and some businesses close temporarily during this low period.
