Tucked high in the cloud forests of Eastern Antioquia, Cannúa was conceived as Colombia’s first sustainable, high-end ecolodge. The reserve houses just 18 rooms and cabañas, spread across acres of rewilded hillside and organic gardens, with floor-to-ceiling valley views and simple yet comfortable interiors.
The reserve is rooted in the philosophy of permaculture, and time here is all about nature: walks through forests alive with birdlife, adventures along pre-Hispanic routes in the hills, and imaginative Colombian cooking with produce sourced from the surrounding landscapes.
What we love about Cannúa Lodge
- The cabañas seem to float in the forest canopy, with wraparound full-length windows and private balconies providing uninterrupted views of the San Nicolás Valley.
- Located in one of the most biodiverse bird areas on the planet – many endemic species of birds, trees and amphibians can only be found here.
- Sensitive architecture that sits lightly on the land, built from energy-efficient compressed earth and local materials.
- A thoughtful culinary approach centred on reviving lesser-known Colombian flavours, using produce harvested daily from the lodge’s own gardens.
- Remote enough to feel secluded, yet only 40-60 minutes from José María Córdova International Airport.
- The philosophy of permaculture which guides how the land is used, protected and shared with the local community.
Learn about permaculture’s mindful philosophy from expert ecologists and discover how the lodge embodies this practice.
Set out with a guide through the forest, following ancient pre-Hispanic routes to lookout points and stopping to picnic by hidden waterfalls. Sunset reveals it in a different light, as the sounds shift and dusk settles. Bird watchers can look for motmots and emerald toucanets; others may simply settle in on the deck and watch the canopy open with a cocktail in hand.
Tasting journeys of coffee, rum, and chocolate are led by local producers, each one uncovering another layer of Colombian history.
Beyond the lodge, Cocorná offers paragliding over Andean valleys, while Marinilla and Guatapé provide colourful windows into Antioquian culture.
