WELCOME TO AMOMOXTLI
Set in the folds of the Valle de Atongo beneath the Tepozteco Mountains, Amomoxtli is a refined hideaway just 90 minutes south of Mexico City.
Although not far from the capital, Amomoxtli feels light years away from its noise and glare. This is the thinking traveller’s bolthole: elegant without preening, deeply local without performance.
The grounds, rich with ahuehuete and blooming with wild herbs, surround a former family estate turned boutique hotel where every detail – from the handwoven textiles to the mole recipe passed down by the cook’s great-aunt – speaks of place.
What we love about Amomoxtli
- That rare, seamless blend of comfort and cultural depth; not a pastiche of ‘spiritual Mexico,’ but something far older and truer.
- The hotel’s Mesa de Origen restaurant, which serves a gentle education in the edible soul of Morelos.
- The spa, replete with proper curanderos, volcanic stones and thundering temazcal ceremonies.
- The architecture: traditional, dignified, and never trying too hard.
- The location: close enough to Mexico City for a short escape, but worlds away in pace and philosophy.

What to do at Amomoxtli
Amomoxtli is not a place that demands an itinerary. It encourages a slower pace, the kind of luxury travel where doing very little is not only allowed but expected.
You can start with yoga by the pool, or join the locals on the steep climb to the hilltop temple of Tepozteco – more pilgrimage than hike, though both leave you breathless. On your way down, stroll through the nearby town of Tepoztlán to experience its markets stocked with handmade wares and its rich spiritual legacy; it’s said to be the birthplace of the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl.
The spa is an unapologetically serious affair, offering treatments that lean into ancestral healing, including energy cleanses, herbal compresses, temazcal rituals conducted with drumming and chanting and a good deal of steam.
If you’re feeling industrious, try your hand at cooking with huitlacoche and pumpkin flowers in a smoke kitchen, or blending floral perfumes from the gardens. Or simply float between pool and bar, allowing slow afternoons to segue into long, sensory dinners on the terrace, with dishes like barbecued corn with grasshopper mayonnaise, hibiscus flower taquitos and huitlacoche quesadillas.

When to Travel
Tepoztlán is a year-round destination. The dry season, from November to May, offers warm days and crisp evenings, ideal for outdoor dining and mountain hikes. The rainy season, June through October, sees short, dramatic downpours that leave the hillsides vivid green and the gardens in full bloom.
For those seeking spiritual energy, many visit around the spring equinox, when the town fills with pilgrims and healers gathering at the Tepozteco pyramid.
