A journey to Uyuni is truly a once in a lifetime adventure. The flats skew perspective, providing incredible displays of light as reflections from the sun, moon and stars shift throughout the day.
Traversing the terrain in a 4X4 vehicle, your private driver can take you to any number of fascinating highlights of the salt flats. Drive through breathtakingly beautiful landscapes to reach the sub-aquatic Chiquini Cave, which shelters calificied magma and petrified corals. Marvel at mummies and ancient ceramics at the Pukara de Ayque ruins, and visit the giant cacti of Cajchi Island. You can also learn the secrets of salt extraction and wander amongst the wrecked locomotives of Uyuni’s train cemetery. There are any number of colourful volcanic lagoons and hidden islands to explore.
At night, the skies glow with distant planets, dwarf galaxies and the Milky Way. Learn about the Andean cosmovision, try your hand at astro-photography and stargaze through telescopes with an expert guide. During the rainy season, the flooded salt flats are transformed into a horizon-bending mirror that reflects the vast dome of the sky. At night you’ll find yourself standing in the centre of a glittering galaxy.
The Airstream campers are located under the foot of the Tunupa volcano, approximately an hour’s drive from Uyuni airport. There are direct flights to Uyuni from La Paz, Santa Cruz, and Sucre.
You can visit the Uyuni Salt Flats throughout the year. From June – September (the dry season) the landscapes are more accessible by car and you can explore further afield in the salt desert. In the wet season, from April – October, rains flood the salt flats and the skies are reflected in the shallow waters. The resulting mirror effect is mesmerising.
