PSA are in allegiance with the American Nicaraguan Foundation, set up by philanthropists Don Alfredo Pellas and his wife Theresita. The Foundation operates a range of projects in Nicaragua supporting impoverished communities across the country, with 120 workers taking on the Foundation’s main objective: to alleviate poverty. It covers a local school, orphanage and medical centre, and is one of the country’s biggest suppliers of medicine, ensuring supplies reach small, rural hospitals. This is an incredible cause and we welcome you to experience and be involved in the work the foundation does during your holiday to Nicaragua.
The charity has a particular focus on Nandaime, a town next to Nekupe Lodge, where we always recommend our clients spend a few days. The American Nicaraguan Foundation has done significant work with the local community here; they are devout Catholics and are building a church in the village so that the community do not have to walk miles to find a place to pray. They have also built wells and a whole new area of housing with aluminium roofs (as opposed to mud), in order to protect the local residents against the severe rains they experience throughout the months of September & October. From Nekupe, a lodge that offers adventure and relaxation in a beautiful setting, you can get involved in the ANF’s local projects as much or as little as you please. Many of the proceeds from Nekupe’s tourism operation go towards the ANF and you can learn more about this during your stay.
