Art Travel

Brazil is the powerhouse for contemporary art and design in South America.

Speak To A Specialist

Art Travel

From the established art scenes of Latin America’s most sophisticated capitals to the textiles and handicrafts of the Andean highlands, Latin America is a rich in artistic expression.  Brazil and Mexico are the powerhouses for contemporary art and design, hosting world class international art fairs and, in the case of Brazil, the epic Inhotim art park, owned by mining billionaire, Bernardo Paz.

The art scene in other parts of the continent focuses around a handful of notable galleries and some remarkable private collections. These remain very much word of mouth with limited public access (that’s where we come in!). We organise specialised art tours, fixing meetings with curators and visits to artists’ studios. If you fall in love with a piece, we will make the necessary arrangements for it to be sent home for you. Ex-Sotheby’s, Pepa Portman, heads up this arm of the business.

Mexico City, Bogota, Santiago, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Rio and Lima are the cities to watch.  Bogota’s Museo de Oro boasts a treasure trove; Lima’s Larco Museum houses a private collection celebrating 5,000 years of Andean civilisations; and Mexico City’s Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera museums shouldn’t be missed.

Journey to traditional weaving communities in the Peruvian Andes; visit black-clay potters and wood-whittling artisans in Oaxaca and leather workers and silversmiths in the Argentine Pampas; explore textile and craft markets in the lake-side villages of Atitlan, or take a street-art tour in Valparaiso or Medellin.

The Inside Track

What people say

  • I just wanted to say what a triumph the whole expedition was. All brilliantly arranged by you and your team. And I really don't think I would have changed a thing. We adored it all and felt we spent just the right amount of time at each place. Each hotel . was stunning. Best rooms, very quiet, very big and with great views. And really good food at all of them. You also successfully managed to minimise or vary the travel - which was quite an achievement considering the distances we covered. Catching very early or late pm flights where possible really works as you don't waste the day. We loved our guides . All very intelligent, well informed and spoke excellent English. So, a thousand thanks. We will be recommending you and PlanSouthAmerica to all our friends. Tom and I are already talking about a return next February.
