Travel With Purpose
This year the Sol y Luna Association are our chosen charity partner. Offering equal education opportunities for children from Peru’s Sacred Valley, the group aims to improve the lives of young people through education.
Speaking mainly indigenous languages and in a remote corner of the country, inhabitants of the Andean highlands often have very little interaction outside of their immediate community.
Through Sol y Luna’s work, these children of all ages also receive food, rehabilitation and any special support they might need.
For every traveller we send to Latin America, we donate $50 to the project which goes towards teaching materials and food supplies for the school.
Arriving in the Sacred Valley of the Incas in 1988, Petit and Franz wanted to offer the children a better life through education.
Beginning by helping local schools by improving their infrastructure and organizing sports and cultural activities. The couple then went on to found Sol y Luna Lodge to help fund educational projects as well as to create jobs for the community. Following ten years of working with the community, Petit and Franz decided to open the Sol y Luna Intercultural School.
Today, there are almost 200 students from 20 different surrounding communities who attend the school. Many of the children are disabled, underprivileged or have special educational needs. Utilising donations from guests, friends and benefactors, more than 90% of students receive a full or partial scholarship.
Following Peru’s curriculum, children study traditional school subjects as well as learning more practical work skills such as hotel management with the aim of gaining employment. Particular attention is given to learning English and computer courses.
Head chef of Sol y Luna Hotel has developed a healthy nutritional menu for all the students to ensure each student has a mid-morning snack and lunch while at school.
How to get involved
Guests staying at the Sol y Luna may request a guided tour of the school during their stay and discover more about their history, objectives and current projects. Travellers who wish to may also donate to the project, choosing whether their donation is directed at new classrooms, education, therapy or medical care and maintenance.
