Bolivia is a country of extremes: breathlessly high cities, stark landscapes, long-held ancient worldviews. Alongside this, a contemporary art and food scene has come into its own, driven by a new generation of artists and chefs who are redefining the country’s cultural identity.

Begin in La Paz, where nearly a million people live at 3,600 metres above sea level, poured into a caldera beneath Mount Illimani. Plazas throng with pedestrians and cholas (bowler-hatted Aymara women) selling local goods, battered buses and brightly painted taxis push through the streets, and cable cars soar high overhead. @salargaleria and @neo.galeria anchor the city’s contemporary art scene, while the Witches Market trades in all manner of curios. Base yourself at @atixhotel, and make time for a table at @aramirestaurante.

From here, the road leads north-west to Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake and the spiritual birthplace of the Inca. Set out by boat to Isla del Sol to explore pre-Hispanic ceremonial sites, sacred springs and small communities that have changed little in centuries.

End on the Salar de Uyuni, nearly 11,000 square kilometres of blinding salt, cactus-dotted islands and rock formations - the remnants of long-evaporated prehistoric lakes. Our pick here is @casa.gaston, a new art hotel-museum on the edge of the salt flats, conceived by late artist and ‘Andean Warhol’ Gastón Ugalde - or continue overland across the altiplano into Chile.

When Imogen came to us looking for a family advent

When Imogen came to us looking for a family adventure to Peru, we designed a twelve-day journey through our very favourite parts of the country - from Lima’s culinary heights to Inca heartlands, and deep into the Amazon by riverboat. Here’s what she had to say about her experience.

“From planning the trip, through all our preparation, to the trip itself and to our return home, Plan South America were absolutely fantastic. The trip they put together was extraordinary, with just the right mix of adventure, relaxation, education and fun. Every guide was knowledgeable, caring and full of personality, and when asked to tweak things at a moment’s notice they did so expertly and with good humour.

Touches like some books sent to us to help us get in the mood for the trip, the Spotify playlist for the journey, and the surprise gift after we had got home, made the whole experience better than any I had done before. We’ve used all the usual “luxury” travel agents who all have their strong points, but if I go back to South America it will definitely be with PSA - they are in a league of their own. I only wish there was a Plan Africa, Plan Indonesia, Plan Eastern Europe...”
