Estancia Cristina

LAGO ARGENTINA, EL CALAFATE

WELCOME TO ESTANCIA CRISTINA

Estancia Cristina is what happens when remoteness is taken seriously. No roads, no noise, no neighbours, just the Patagonian wild laid bare.

Reached only by boat across Lago Argentino, this century-old estancia is surrounded by glaciers, fossils, and silence so pure it almost rings. Founded in 1914 and still defined by that frontier spirit, Estancia Cristina offers a kind of pared-back luxury that feels earned.

The 20-room lodge is simple but comfortable, with long views and short menus built on local produce. Days are filled with proper adventures, hiking, fossil hunting, ice field crossings, and nights with stars that don’t compete for attention. Come for the space, the silence, and the sense that you’re somewhere few have ever truly seen.

What we love about Estancia Cristina

  • The remote arrival by boat across Lago Argentino sets the tone before you even step ashore.
  • A true sense of off-grid Patagonia, with no roads in or out and no distractions but the landscape.
  • Access to extraordinary hikes and 4×4 expeditions, including the Upsala Glacier and fossil-filled canyons.
  • Only 20 rooms for simplicity, warmth, and views that don’t need dressing up.
  • The estancia’s centuries of history, giving the place soul beyond the scenery.

What to do at Estancia Cristina

Days at Estancia Cristina are built around movement: slow, steady, and always with a view.

Estancia Cristina is your base for reaching the Upsala Glacier lookout, descending into the Cañadón de los Fósiles, and following remote trails across glacier valleys, alpine lakes, and lenga forests.

Some days involve 4×4 exhibitions and long hikes, others are gentler, like the short walk to Los Perros waterfall or a lakeside trail to Laguna de la Pesca. Everything is self-contained, well-marked, and refreshingly crowd-free.

When to Travel

October to April

The season at Estancia Cristina runs from October to April, when Patagonia is most accessible. December through February brings the warmest days (typically between 15–22°C) and long hours of daylight, ideal for hiking and boat trips across Lago Argentino. October and November are quieter, with snow still on the higher trails and wildflowers beginning to bloom. March and April are crisp and golden, with fewer visitors and spectacular autumn colours. Outside of these months, weather and access become unreliable. This is a place that follows nature’s lead.
