Rock on in Rio or eat your heart out in Peru?

September is our favourite month to travel; here’s what you can’t miss…

Plan South America | Field Notes | September in South America - Lima Parade

The Fiesta del Yamor, Otavalo, Ecuador:

The first week of September Otavalo hosts an indigenous celebration to the Sun God in gratitude for the year’s harvest. It is a family festival and many Ecuadorians who live abroad see it as a homecoming event. Chicha, a pre-Columbian drink made from fermented corn, is passed around for locals and visitors to drink and be welcomed by the community. Expect parades, fireworks, traditional music, and a swimming competition in the icy waters of Lake San Pablo. (Sept 1-7)

Mistura, Lima, Peru:

One of the best food festivals in South America, Mistura celebrates the strong heritage of Peruvian culinary tradition. Famous for its ceviche, Peruvian cuisine has gained international attention for its fresh and feisty flavours. Attracting over 350,000 food lovers from around the world, Mistura is a great place to see celebrity chefs in action; guests can even learn a recipe or two in themed cooking classes. (Sept. 4-13)

Independence Day, Chile:

Chile’s rich cultural heritage comes to life with non-stop dancing and rodeos over a 4-day weekend. Thousands of kites fill the air in Antofagasta, national rodeo finals are held in Rancagua and open-air concerts hit San Pedro de Atacama. This is the best time to sample the country’s traditions. (Sept. 18-19)

Rock in Rio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil:

Rock in Rio is a week long celebration of rock music (with a little pop, blues and rap thrown in for good measure). This year marks its 30th anniversary – and with a lineup reading like a Who’s Who in music, it’s the ultimate music festival. Previous performers include Beyonce, Muse and Metallica; artists such as Queen, One Republic and The Script have been confirmed for this year’s show. Get us to Rio! (Sept. 18 – 27)
